Book of 1 Thessalonians
The book or epistle of 1 Thessalonians was written by Paul to the church in Thessalonica, with the support of Silas and young Timothy. Paul commends their faith emanating in a practical way from Godly love. Paul emphasises how their testimony spread to other regions. He also reminded them that this can only come about, under the power of the Holy Spirit.
In the opening chapter after a formal greeting he says in 1 Thessalonians 1:2 -
4 For we know, brothers and sisters[b] loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7 And so you became a modelto all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8 The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, 9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.
Paul continues to give fatherly, encourages word, emphasising that his words are not patronising. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 reads -
Although Satan will seek to hinder, by preventing Paul from visiting, with perseverance God will help to break through in situations. Then Paul finally feels the joy of them being his own spiritual sons and daughters. Paul continues in 1 Thessalonians 2:17 to 19 -
In 1 Thessalonians 3 Paul reminds the church that the Christian life is constantly being bombarded by Satan seeking to undermine all we seek to serve God. Paul wisely seeks an alternate way for the church to get encouragement by sending young Timothy. We read in 1 Thessalonians 3:1to 5 -
Paul feels fulfilled and is greatly encourage by the report Timothy brings back, increasing his desire to visit them. In 1 Thessalonians 3:6 to 10 we read -
11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.
Paul concludes this chapter by reminding them of how Gods love is the key to a fulfilled Godly life -
In the next chapter 1 Thessalonians 4 although the church is an encouragement to Paul, Paul cautions the church about the unhealthy danger lurking in the sinful world we live in. In 1 Thessalonians 4: 1 to 8 he writes -
3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control your own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable,5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God;6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.[b] The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.8 Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.
Paul is unapologetic as he repeats the advice he gave in the end of the previous chapter, not just to continue in God’s love but to increase in God’s love by being a walking example of Christ Himself. 1 Thessalonians 4: 9 to 12 he writes -
In concluding this chapter Paul teaches them about the joyous future each Christian, especially if the Lord comes back to earth before they die. In 1 Thessalonians 4: 13 to 18 he writes -
Paul continues in the next chapter to caution the church regarding when Jesus is going to come back again and to be alert, and not be swayed by what the world might say or believe. In 1 Thessalonians 5:1to 11 he writes -
4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:12 to 28 Paul gives a final greeting as he concludes this book, in holding onto Gods love have respect for one another seeking to good, he writes -
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us. 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
